APPEAL TO ESTABLISH A MEMORIAL IN MEMORY OF POLISH WAR VETERANS BURIED AT CREDENHILL IN HEREFORDSHIRE, U.K.

Cllr Mike Oborski (Honorary Consul RP)writes...

For many years there was a Polish Old Peoples home in the tiny beautiful little Herefordshire village of Credenhill — not to be confused with the old Marian Fathers’ home in Hereford.

The Credenhill home has now become an English residential home for the elderly although I gather that it still has a few Polish residents.

I have now been contacted by both the Credenhilll Parish Council and I have also talked to the Credenhilll Parochial Church Council. This is a tiny English Parish with a very small population. They have ensured that there is a book in the Church with the names and details of deceased Poles. However, there are some fifty unmarked Polish graves in the church graveyard.

They would like to see a suitable plaque within the graveyard in remembrance of these Poles all of whom would have been Polish ex-servicemen.

As the Polish Honorary Consul for the region I would like to see a substantial plaque inscribed with the Polish Eagle and suitable wording in both Polish and English.

These were soldiers and youngsters who fought and suffered in the cause of “your freedom and ours”.

I would like to raise between £1,000 and £2,000 in order to establish a suitable plaque, to provide a proper inauguration ceremony and to provide a small surplus for maintenance and the placing of flowers and candles on the appropriate occasions.

This enterprise is far too small and modest to require the establishment of an honorary committee or the creation of an independent charitable fund.

It does, however, require a little generosity from interested organisations and individual within the Polish community both regionally and nationally.

If donations can be sent to me they will be duly acknowledged individually and a full account of both receipts and expenditures will be sent to all donors, the Credenhill Parish Council, the Credenhill Parochial Church Council, and to the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in London. I would also hope to make the outcome available through the columns of Dziennik Polski.

Donations should be made payable to “M M G Oborski” and posted to the Consulate of the Republic of Poland, 6, Osborne Close, Kidderminster, Worcs. DY10 3YY, United Kingdom.
